A pearl wall finish that looks softly luminous by day can become much more reflective when the lights come on. Before approving a sample, place it in the room where it will be used and look at it under both daylight and the evening lighting.
Consider the wall itself too. A broad, uninterrupted surface gives you room to see the finish. Shelves, controls and several doorways break it up, so a subtler sheen may work better on a busy wall.
Look from the places people will use
In a dining room, you'll often see the feature wall from across the table. At a hotel reception, people may first notice it from the entrance, then stand close to it at the desk. Check the sample from those positions to judge how much variation in the sheen you want.
Mark the outlets, lights, signage, artwork and joinery on the wall drawing. They interrupt the finish and can cast shadows across it. Knowing their positions before application helps avoid awkward gaps or late changes.
Try the sample with the room's lights
Put the sample against the intended wall, or as close to it as you can. View it in daylight, then switch on the ceiling, wall and decorative lights planned for the evening. Look straight at it and along the surface; from an angle, the sheen and trowel marks can be more noticeable.
Hold the chosen metal, stone, fabric and timber samples beside it. Their warm or cool tones can affect how the pearl finish looks, so compare them together before making a decision.
Check the surface and its edges
A reflective finish can draw attention to uneven preparation and rough edges. Have the team review patch repairs, hairline cracks, lighting cut-outs and joins with cabinetry before work starts. Agree where the finish will stop and whether that edge needs a trim, shadow gap or clean line.
Keep the approved sample and record its colour, the amount of visible trowel variation and the lighting used to assess it. Photos are useful for sharing the choice with the team, though they can't replace seeing the physical sample in the room.
Make the sample review useful on site
DecoPaint applies pearl finishes as decorative wall treatments. Alongside the sample, the team needs to review the wall condition, final lighting layout and any fixed joinery or metalwork that meets the finish.
Take your lighting plan and material board to a DecoPaint sample review, then check the chosen sample under the room's own light before approval.
