A driveway sample shows the aggregate, but little of what will hold it in place. On site, follow the route cars take, the pedestrian path and the way water leaves the entrance. Those routes determine the base and edge details.
Trace the water route first
Mark gates, downpipes, garden irrigation, driveway falls, drains and low points. Draw where surface water goes, particularly near the garage and front door. An aggregate layer will follow the base beneath it; it will not correct a low point that sends water toward a threshold.
Check planting beds beside the drive. Irrigation can carry soil and loose mulch across the finish, so draw a firm edge where the two meet.
Give the surface a firm edge
Resin-bound surfacing needs restrained perimeter conditions. Record where it meets a wall, kerb, metal gate track, drain channel, paving and garage threshold. Those junctions should be shown in section as well as plan, particularly where vehicles turn or cross the same point repeatedly.
If the driveway includes steps, slopes or a change in material, draw the transition before deciding how far the aggregate field will extend. An edge drawn too late may leave a narrow strip beside the gate or steps. Those strips are awkward to install and repair.
Choose aggregate in the setting where it will be used
Bring nearby wall, gate and planting references to the sample review. Set the sample beside the gate and wall materials. Look at it wet, in shade and under the evening lights. Agree the texture for the route cars and people will actually use.
